The Ministry of Culture’s archaeology group brings together statutory survey, monument-zone regulation and partnership funding. The three organisations below are published on the official Ministry archaeology page.
Archaeological Survey of India
The Archaeological Survey of India, founded in 1861 by Sir Alexander Cunningham, functions under the Ministry of Culture as the chief institution for archaeological research and preservation. It maintains 3,679 nationally important monuments and sites and enforces the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, and the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
ASI circles and specialised branches carry out excavation, conservation, epigraphy, science, horticulture and heritage management across the country. Legal status of any monument is a gazette notification, not a website label — verify on ASI and Ministry records before citing protection.
National Monuments Authority
Established in 2010 under the Ministry of Culture, the National Monuments Authority ensures the protection of centrally protected monuments by regulating construction within prohibited and regulated zones. Empowered by the AMASR (Amendment and Validation) Act, it reviews construction proposals and drafts heritage bye-laws after inviting public input.
As urban development intensifies, NMA balances heritage conservation with modern infrastructure, safeguarding the setting of protected monuments.
National Culture Fund
The National Culture Fund was established in 1996 under the Charitable Endowments Act, 1890, to foster partnerships between the government, individuals and organisations for the preservation of India’s cultural heritage. A Council chaired by the Union Minister of Culture and an Executive Committee manage the Fund.
NCF is a funding platform for cultural projects and a route for public participation in protecting artistic and historical legacy.
